OUR MISSION
Caring for the physical injuries sustained by the men and women who serve our country is crucial, and rightly so. Yet, the mental wounds that affect our veterans are equally significant. The Jason Simcakoski Foundation, Inc. is dedicated to enhancing access to quality mental health care for veterans and their families, while also advocating for effective, non-pharmaceutical treatment alternatives.

JASON’S STORY
Jason “Jake” Simcakoski was born on September 15, 1978, in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, to Marv and Linda Simcakoski. As the oldest of four siblings, Jason was a natural leader, excelling in sports, especially wrestling, and always looking out for his younger siblings, particularly his sister Michelle. After graduating from Pacelli High School in 1997, he chose to join the Marine Corps, driven by a desire to serve and challenge himself in the toughest branch of the military. He quickly proved himself, earning the rank of Corporal and receiving several honors, including the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon and the Good Conduct Medal.
While stationed in Hawaii, Jason met his future wife, fellow Marine Heather Fluty, and they had a daughter, Anaya, who became his world. Jason cherished every moment with his daughter, from coloring for hours to enjoying the outdoors.
After his honorable discharge in 2002, Jason struggled with a head injury sustained during his service. Unfortunately, his search for treatment led him to become dependent on pain medications, spiraling into addiction. Over time, he became a shadow of the strong, fit Marine he once was, and tragically, he passed away on August 30, 2014.
In the wake of his death, Jason’s family committed to ensuring no other veteran would suffer as he did. They worked tirelessly to reform how the VA handles mental health and addiction treatment, leading to the creation of the Jason Simcakoski Memorial and Promise Act, also known as “Jason’s Law.” Signed into law on June 22, 2016, Jason’s Law significantly changed the VA’s approach to opioid prescribing and introduced stronger oversight and accountability in veteran care. Although there is still work to be done, the family takes pride in this bipartisan success in honoring Jason’s legacy and improving care for veterans.
The consequences of addiction are far reaching. It isn’t just the veteran that is impacted, but their family, their community and our country. That is why the Jason Simcakoski Foundation exists. Together, we provide recreational services to veterans and their families to keep them engaged and active in their communities when they return home.
