IOLA Wis. (WAOW) — Jason Simcakoski, a Stevens Point native and US Marine veteran died on August 30th 2014.
For the 2nd year in a row, Jason’s family held a golf outing in remembrance of his life and to raise money for other veterans. In Iola, more than 100 people who attended the golf outing tee-ed off Saturday morning.
The foundation is dedicated to honoring Jason’s memory by working to improve mental health care for veterans. “I know he’s looking down and he’s proud today to see whats going on,” said Marvin Simcakoski, Jason’s dad.
But this outing was s’more than just your typical round of golf, at one hole golfers has to see who could hit a giant marshmallow the furthest.
All the money will go toward re-opening the Tomah therapy course and also renaming it the Jason Simcakoski Memorial Golf Course.”It’s been closed ever since my son died and it’s going on over 5 years, proceeds from all this are just helping pay for the fertilizer equipment things like that,” said Marvin.
The course will offer veterans receiving health services at the Tomah VA an opportunity to engage in therapeutic outdoor activity.
